Web Protocols are ways in which the internet can convey information to individual computers and visa versa. There are many different protocols and new and up coming improved ones that companies are releasing. The three main ones are (HTML) HyperText Markup Language, (HTTP) HyperText Transfer Protocol and (URL) Uniform Resource Locator. HTML is code that is used to create a website, these are often made up of tables which space out the work, this has now been taken over by flash (.flv) it is an easier and better way in which to make websites but having said this a new HTML being released that is expected to be better than flash. (HTTP) this is how the (HTML) is transferred to the computer and rather than being shown as the code it is transferred to something that we can understand. (URL) this is the address at the top of the screen that we can see this is so that we can find what we are looking for, without these it would be impossible to find anything. Above are the three main protocols that make up the web there are many others that serve important purposes to the way we live.
One of these is SMS this stands for Short Messaging Service which most people use every day; it is a form of written digital communication that is used in text messages and emails. It can be used to communicate across long distances by customers to a certain company that runs it or it can also be used by that same company in order to advertise. They are cheaper, faster and more efficient than sending a letter as not only is it free you are the one sending it and you can be certain that it was received by the intended person.
WAP is another protocol that is often used by many people throughout the day, it stands for Wireless Application Protocol but most people call it the mobile internet. This is because like the name says it allows people to access the internet on their mobile phones, this is efficient as it is convenient and can be viewed where ever you go. The sites can be different to how they are viewed on the internet on a computer as they are made in the most basic form so that the mobile can download it faster to the smaller screen.
FTP is the next protocol, this stands for File Transfer Protocol as the name indicates it is used in order to transfer files from the internet to the computer or from one computer across the internet and to another computer. Sometimes it is also used by the creator of a website; your computer downloads certain files that can't be viewed any other way.
WAN stands for Wide Area Network, this is the protocol that is the internet. It is a connection of smaller networks these can be local area networks (LAN) and Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN). A LAN is a protocol that allows a connection between close working computers these are some likely to be used in a office or school and MAN is what is used in much larger scale places like cities with link all the individual computers to the WAN.
